I was born and raised in Windsor Ontario but I'm now
living in Nanaimo BC and loving it.

My career path included working on the railroad for nineteen years followed by a career in the financial industry until circumstances got me into an early

departure from the work force.
I spend my time now enjoying my family which includes three children and nine
grandchildren. as well as getting up for a song or two at the local karaoke venues. I would enjoy corresponding with others carrying our fine name.

I am currently battling cancer and so I am donating the rest of this page to the Canadian Cancer Society.

What is cancer?
Cancer is a disease that starts in our cells. Our bodies are made up of millions of cells, grouped together to form tissues or organs such as muscles and bones, the lungs, or the liver. Genes inside each cell order it to grow, work, reproduce and die.
Normally, our cells obey these orders and we remain healthy. Sometimes a cell’s instructions get mixed up and it behaves abnormally. After a while, groups of abnormal cells can circulate in the blood or immune system, or they can form lumps or tumours.
Tumours can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumour cells stay in one place in the body and are not usually life-threatening.
Malignant tumour cells are able to invade the tissues around them and spread to other parts of the body. Cancerous cells that spread to other parts of the body are called metastases. The first sign that a malignant tumour has spread is often swelling of nearby lymph nodes, but cancer can metastasize to almost any part of the body. It is important to find malignant tumours early and treat them.

Cancers are named after the part of the body where they start. For example, cancer that starts in the colon but spreads to the liver is called colon cancer with liver metastases.

Basic Cancer Research

Biomedical cancer research takes place in the laboratory, where scientists seek to understand the disease at its deepest levels. Using sophisticated tools and technologies, they peer inside single cells, observing and describing complicated biochemical and genetic processes.

In the beginning, most research funded by the Canadian Cancer Society focused on straightforward questions about cancer. How does the disease start? How do tumours grow and spread to other parts of the body? Can this growth be stopped?

Basic cancer research has already yielded many answers, and our understanding of cancer has never been greater than it is today. But from these answers, more questions have emerged, many of them extremely complex.

The range of basic cancer research is vast. For example:

bullet
Scientists are hunting for substances or "markers" which can be detected in the bodies of people with different kinds of cancer.
bullet
Researchers are trying to find out why certain cancer cells and tumours become resistant to chemotherapy or other treatments.
bullet
Scientists are looking at the genetic basis of different cancers – for example, how certain genes make us more vulnerable to cancer or else make us more resistant to anti-cancer drugs.
bullet
Various substances are being carefully analyzed and tested – either for their ability to fight cancer or for their potential to cause it.
bullet
Specialized animal models and cell lines are being developed to help scientists carry out their cancer research studies.

The ultimate goal of basic cancer research is twofold:

  1. coming up with the rare, "breakthrough" discovery that will help prevent, control or even cure cancer
  2. contributing a small but significant bit of knowledge that will help other scientists as they work on their own piece of the cancer puzzle
